Josh Wolfram will be playing pro basketball this fall. The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack alum has signed a two year contract with Umea BSKT of the Sweden-Basketligan league.

The 6’10” South Kamloops graduate completed his CIS career with the WolfPack this past season being named a Canada West all-star along with Basketball BC’s Male University Basketball Player of the Year.

“After CIS Nationals I was contacted by a number of agents,” said Wolfram, who is completing his Bachelor of Business Administration degree at TRU. “I went with Matt Slan and he got me a number of job offers. This was the best. Umea wants me to be a ‘go to’ guy immediately and it is a guaranteed contact.”

Wolfram also had interest from teams in Finland and the Czech Republic.

“This is a great move for Josh, “says WolfPack head coach Scott Clark. “

He is going to a country that is very similar to Canada as far as a standard of living goes. It is very good basketball. He is a very good basketball player and a great first step for Josh to becoming a professional basketball player.”

Wolfram played 20 games last year for TRU averaging 19 points (11th in the CIS) and 9.6 rebounds per game (9th in the nation). He was fifth in Canada in defensive rebounds (139).

He started his CIS career with Calgary and played the final three with the WolfPack. Wolfram has career stats with TRU of 58 games, averaging 16 points per game, 524 rebounds, 59 blocks and 59 steals.

Wolfram has played international basketball before as he was a member of Team Canada at the 2015 FISU games in South Korea. He averaged 3.8 points and 3.1 rebounds in 13.1 minutes of court time as Canada finished 7th.

The Sweden-Basketligan is an 11 team league which plays a 30 game schedule. Wolfram will be one of two imports on Umea. The other is American George Valentine.

“We are very excited to have inked a contract with Josh for next season,” stated Umea BSKT head coach Jesper Gustavsson. “We are looking forward to seeing him in Sweden next season and being a big part of our team. I’ve heard only good things about him and he should fit great into what we’re doing on and off the court.”

Wolfram was nominated for the Kamloops Sports Council University Athlete of the Year for his achievements in 2015. During his time at TRU, he was a leader in the team’s community involvement including serving Christmas Dinner at the New Life Community Kitchen, raising funds for Raise A Reader and McHappy Day. He was also involved in coaching a regional team in the Basketball BC development program.

“It will definitely be a step up from the CIS but I will be ready,’ says Wolfram who will stay in Kamloops and train until he leaves for Sweden in mid-August. He will also be a guest instructor at the Olynyk Klynyk next month at the Tournament Capital Centre.

Wolfram is the third member of the South Kamloops Titans 2009-10 team to play professional basketball following in the steps of Kelly Olynyk of the NBA Boston Celtics and John Bantock, who played in the United Kingdom.

“To think that three of us have gone onto play pro—especially one in the NBA from one team in a smaller center is definitely unique,’ he says.

DOUBLE DRIBBLES: Wolfram says Umea is a city of about 110 thousand people: 40 thousand of which are students. The weather is very similar to Vancouver with the temperature in the winter falling to minus five.

Clark says Wolfram has a great opportunity: “Josh is in a good situation. He will see a great part of the world and get paid to play a game he loves, basketball. It will be fun for a young guy. If I was 24 and could get paid to play and see the world, personally it would really be fun. Josh should have a great time. We are very proud of his development over the years and wish him luck.”

Slan Sports Management is pleased to announce that Tamara Tatham has signed a one-year contract with Dynamo GUVD Novosibirsk in Euro Cup and the Russian Women’s Premier Basketball League (PBL).

Tatham, a 6’1” forward, is coming off of a championship season with the Townsville Fire of Australia’s Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL).

Tatham suffered a season-ending injury after 14 games played, but ranked 3rd on her team in scoring and rebounds with 11.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. She also averaged 2.2 assists per game and shot 86% from the free throw line.

A Brampton, Ontario native, Tatham attended high school at Chinguacousy Secondary School before playing collegiate basketball at the University of Massachusetts. In her senior year, she achieved career-best averages with 12.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. Tatham currently ranks 6thplace all-time in career rebounds at the University of Massachusetts with 755 and 5th place all-time in career steals with 190.

Tatham started her professional career with Catz Lappeenranta of the Finnish Korisliiga in 2007-2008, where she led the team to a Finnish Cup and the Korisliiga Finals. From 2008-2013, Tatham played in Germany’s Damen Basketball Bundesliga (DBBL). Over the course of her five seasons there, Tatham won almost every major award. She was a one-time Eurobasket.com German DBBL Player of the Year, a two-time Import Player of the Year, and was named to three All-German DBBL First Teams.

Tatham was also named Eurobasket.com All-German DBBL Center of the Year in 2009, Forward of the Year in both 2012 and 2013, and Defensive Player of the Year in 2012. Tatham was consistently among the league leaders in scoring, rebounding, and steals throughout her time in Germany. She also reached two DBBL Finals, once with Wasserburg in 2010 and once with Halle in 2012.

In 2013-2014, Tatham signed with Piešťanské Čajky of the Slovakian Extraliga. That season, Piešťanské finished 2nd in the regular season and Tatham ranked 5th in the league in scoring with 15.0 points per game.

Tatham re-signed with Piešťanské for 2014-2015 and led the team to the Extraliga Finals. Tatham was awarded the Eurobasket.com Extraliga Player of the Year Award that season. She ranked 2nd in the Extraliga in scoring with 16.4 points per game, 7th in rebounding with 6.0 rebounds per game, and 6th in steals with 2.5 per game.

Tatham has represented Canada on the international stage since 2005, when she competed with the Development Women’s National Team at the 2005 Universiade. In 2007, she earned a spot on the Senior Women’s National Team, and has since competed in 140 games with the squad. In 2012, Tatham competed for Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Canada reached the quarterfinals, but was ultimately defeated by the United States, who went on to win gold. Tatham was also a member of the Senior National Team at the 2015 Pan American Games. Tatham averaged 7.2 points, 2.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game to help the team win their first ever gold medal. She also helped the Senior Women’s National Team win gold at the 2015 FIBA Americas, where she was named a tournament All-Star after averaging 8.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. Tatham will again compete at the Olympics this summer in Rio de Janeiro, where Canada hopes to compete for a medal.

“I’m really excited to be going to Dynamo Novosibirsk and am looking forward to new experiences,” said Tatham. “I feel blessed to get this opportunity to play in one of the top leagues in Europe!”

Dynamo GUVD Novosibirsk went 3-3 in the first stage of Euro Cup competition in 2014, and did not qualify for the round of 16. In 2015-2016 Russian competition, Novosibirsk finished 8th overall in the regular season and were eliminated by the undefeated UMMC Ekaterinburg in the quarterfinals of the PBL playoffs.

“After a successful season in the Russian Premier League, many of our team leaders have left,” said Novosibirsk Head Coach, Dmitry Shumikhin.

“Looking ahead to the Euro Cup we needed to make the team even stronger. Tamara is a dynamic player who can play both forward positions on the offensive end, and she is a strong defender against perimeter players and post players. Her high basketball IQ and ability to play for a team’s success will help the whole team to improve and our young players to develop.”
