Nick Wiggins Signs W/ Canterbury (New Zealand)
Site http://www.rams.org.nz/
Twitter https://twitter.com/canterburyrams
Facebook https://www.facebook.com/CanterburyRams/
Click link for Stuff.co site http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/basketball ... y-for-Rams
The Canterbury Rams will run an all-import backcourt in this year's National Basketball League after signing Canadian Nick Wiggins - the older brother of rising NBA talent Andrew Wiggins.
Wiggins, who is 1.98m tall, is a versatile basketballer, being able to cover the shooting guard and both forward positions.
The 24-year-old could team up with American point guard Jamie Adams to form an explosive backcourt combination for the Rams.
Wiggins' brother, Andrew, was the No.1 pick in the 2014 NBA draft and has played for the Minnesota Timberwolves the past two seasons.
There was a chance Andrew might come out to New Zealand to watch his brother play, once the NBA season finished, Rams director Andrew Harrison said.
Nick was a member of the Timberwolves' pre-season squad this season, but was waived after four games.
He has been on the NBA Summer League rosters of the Sacramento Kings, Utah Jazz and Timberwolves over the past two years.
The Toronto native has had NBA development league stints with the Idaho Stampede and Raptors 905 and played professionally in Germany with Tigers Tubingen in 2014.
Wiggins spent his final two years of his college at Wichita State in Kansas and was a member of the side, which made the NCAA final four in 2013, losing to eventual champions Louisville.
Rams coach Mark D1ckel believed Wiggins would make a major impact in the NBL and be a key man for the Rams.
"He's an elite athlete, there's no question about that. He's more than capable of defending and running the court.
"We're not getting him out here to be a role player. We're going to let him go. I'm not going to hold anyone back."
D1ckel's Los Angeles-based agent Daniel Moldovan had been integral in organising the signing. Moldovan also represents Wiggins and believed New Zealand would be a strong fit for him.
"He's really motivated to come over and play well. It seems like he's got a lot to prove," D1ckel said.
Wiggins has played in his brother's shadow for most of his career.
D1ckel said being compared to Andrew, one of the NBA's best young players, was a challenge for Nick, but one he embraced.
"That's something he probably deals with on a daily basis.
"I know how incredibly proud he is of his younger brother. There's absolutely no resentment or hatred in his heart at all about that. I'm sure he wants to show everyone he's capable also."
The Rams will field a smaller line-up this season after they failed to get the job done last year with the biggest squad in the league.
D1ckel said they wanted to play a fast up-tempo game, which should suit Wiggins, Adams and co-captain Ethan Rusbatch, who thrives in the open court.
Canterbury had several players, who could switch between shooting guard and the forward positions, which would make them tough to guard.
Big men Marques Whippy and Gareth Dawson will be tasked with extra responsibility, filling the centre role, in what is becoming a league dominated by guards.
"We can be a real match-up problem for everybody," D1ckel said.
"We're going to be able to defend up the floor more than we were last year. We're going to be able to do some different things defensively as opposed to what we were able to do last year."
Wiggins is expected to arrive in Christchurch within the next fortnight.
Canterbury will embark on a pre-season tour to Brisbane next week from February 4-8, where they will take on Queensland Basketball League opposition.
The Rams open the NBL against the Nelson Giants on March 11 at Christchurch's Cowles Stadium.

Jose Colorado (Quest U) To ExSal Santa Tecla (El Salvador)

-Jose Colorado, one-time shooting guard for the Vancouver Balloholics (2015-2016: 11.75 points, 3.75 assists in four games played)
Signed with EXSAL Basketball in El Salvador- Good Luck Jose!
Jose Colorado was with the Balloholics for a short stay moves on to El Salvador. We wish him the best with his new team. Jose stepped in the same day another player chose to give up on his dream and replaced him on our roster. Below a few words from Jose.
“I came to the Vancouver Balloholics nearly two years removed from any sort of competitive basketball environment, let alone professional setting. Despite that, the franchise gave me every opportunity to prove myself when I approached them. It would have been easy to simply dismiss my request for a tryout but the Balloholics actually evaluated me on my performance on the court rather than any sort of preconceived notion.
It’s with that in mind that I say, if you are serious about reviving or extending your ball career then there are likely few other professional organizations as fruitful as this one around. The coaches are connected, the city is amazing and the roster isn’t overcrowded. I’ve heard of so many horror stories of terribly-run west coast ABA teams. Now I can’t speak on that but what I will say from first-hand experience is, if you are invested in the program, the franchise will be equally as invested in you. I showed up to each practice, game and helped out in the youth academy by coaching and refereeing. For that, the General Manager, Wayne Best, went to bat for me when I approached other full-time professional teams.
Having a professional organization speak highly on my behalf definitely helped me achieve my goal of becoming a full-time pro ball player. And for that I can’t say anything but of the highest regard of the franchise, coaching staff and people.”
