For the Toronto 3D is was mission accomplished.

The 3D came into their North of the Border Basketball League contest against the Hamilton Huskies looking to remain undefeated on the season.

And with a 71-61 decision on Thursday (June 12), they have now won five straight games to share an identical record with Hamilton’s Finest.

Toronto has shown great poise and the veteran savvy group has their team in great form entering the second half of the regular season, whereas the Huskies have had an up and down season, struggling to find their identity.

The 3D started off strong in this matchup and jumped to an early double digit lead in the first half. The Huskies were able to reduce the lead to four points early in the second half but expended too much effort in doing so and came up short in this contest.

Nigel Tyghter had a breakout performance and illustrated his versatile inside-out play in this game. He registered 25 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1 steal to receive Player of the Game.

Sean Nickel continued his excellent play this season, tallying 20 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. Nolan Gooding nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with 9 points, 10 assists, and 3 steals.

For the Huskies, Jasonn Hannibal recorded 16 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1 steal. O.J Watson added 12 points. Ali Askarov and Jimmy Bilenga chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Blessed Sacrament Nation 87 vs Loyola Hawks 84

Despite Blessed Sacrament Nation and the Loyola Hawks both being shorthanded in this matchup, the game didn’t disappoint as it went right down to the wire. Both sides jockeyed for the lead as there were several ties and lead changes as the game progressed. Both sides opened up a three-point barrage in the closing minutes of the game as they traded long arc baskets.

BSN was just able to pull out the victory to end a two-game losing streak.
Chad Bewley, 27 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks, was named Player of the Game. Branko Veljovic had 22 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Matt Savel chipped in with 13 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

Joe Rocca registered 25 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block. Lazar Kojovic was on fire from beyond the arc, recording 23 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal.

Rohan Boney added 18 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block. Nathan McCarthy tallied 18 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks.

Knights 81, Marauders 79

The Knights came into this game on the momentum of a two-game winning streak. And a week earlier, the Marauders earned a big victory over their rivals, the Loyola Hawks, 90-88.

Both the Knights and Marauders started slow in this contest as they looked to assert themselves. The Knights were able to jump out to a double digit lead in the second half and carried that lead into the closing minutes of the game before the Marauders began to battle back. Untimely turnovers by the Knights enabled the Marauders to make their run and tie the game.

With .20 seconds remaining, the Marauders stole the ball but were unable to convert off of the turnover. The Knights regained possession with .16 seconds remaining in the game and held the ball for the last shot. Nick Fayadel tipped in the missed shot by the Knights to gain the victory at the buzzer.

Nick Fayadel (19 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal) was named Player of the Game. Nick Burke registered 15 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds.

The alley-oop to the one-time NCAA star was an eye-catcher. Though it was quickly topped by the vicious block from the high-flying defender that sent the layup attempt screaming into the stands. Which was trumped by the blizzard of three-pointers coming from all over the court. All of it capped by the diminutive point guard's ankle-breaking crossover that was so nasty it even had the victim's team smiling.

No, what's going on at the Redeemer University gym this summer isn't your typical YMCA men's pickup league. This isn't pudgy old guys in headbands, knee-high socks and shorts that were already too short in 1979. More accurately, the North of the Border league is summer ball for guys who can play the game at a level the rest of us can only reach playing NBA15 on Xbox.

"Outside the GTA, this is the most-competitive league in Ontario," says Tyrone Watson, a Hamilton guy who played in March Madness three times as a member of the Mexico State University Aggies and is now part of one of the top teams in this local loop.

Considering Toronto is the new high-rent shopping district for NBA draft picks — Anthony Bennett went first-overall last year and Andrew Wiggins is a favourite to do that this time around, headlining a long list of stars emerging from the area — that's saying something.

What's more remarkable is who's behind it.

Justin Avery had just finished his second year studying sports management at Brock University when he came up with the idea as a 20-year-old in the summer of 2012. He knew there were leagues like this elsewhere, just not here — so he decided to fix that. He took a year off school to make money and then invested $5,000 of his own cash to get things started. END

As teams continue to jockey for playoff seeding entering the final two weeks of regular season action, every game has major playoff implications for each team in the North of the Border Basketball League.

Blessed Sacrament Nation and the Brock Badgers battled in the second of a July 3 doubleheader Featured Games of the Week with BSN coming out on top, 80-70. BSN welcomed back Brady Heslip from his hiatus as he trained in preparation for his participation in the Samsung NBA Summer League. Heslip will be playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves in Las Vegas on Friday (July 11).

BSN gained early control of the game but the young Badgers didn’t relent against their star studded opponents. Strong three-point shooting from the Badgers enabled them to stay within breathing distance throughout this contest. BSN put the foot down in the final minutes of play and sealed the victory. BSN illustrated why they are among the favourites to find themselves in the NBBL championship.

Despite coming up short, the Badgers played very well and were quite impressive.

Taylor Black illustrated why he was a First-Team Ontario University Athletics West Division All-Star with his dynamic play in this contest.

Mohawk began to make its run with four minutes remaining in the second half, chipping away at the deficit. The Marauders couldn’t find their first half shooting accuracy and faltered coming down the stretch. This was a huge victory for Mohawk as they look to assert their playoff seeding.

Andrew Cicuttini, Player of the Game, registered 18 points, 11 rebounds and 1 block. Jeff Hunt tallied 12 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 steal. Quinn Henderson added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist.

In another game last week, the Hamilton Huskies and Knights squared off in a contest that carried with it significant playoff implications. The victors would position themselves within the top eight teams and earn a playoff seed while the loser would be on the outside looking in. Toronto 3D will be shooting for a perfect season in the North of the Border Basketball League’s finale on Thursday night (July 31).

Toronto 3D capped off regular season play with a clean 12-0 record, the latest win a narrow 60-57 decision over Burlington Elite. Toronto will be up against Hamilton’s Finest, who finished their schedule with a 10-2 mark after beating the Waterloo Warriors, 62-51.

In their single meeting during the regular season, 3D edged the Finest, 64-59, in Week 7. Offensively, each team scored 854 points but the Finest had a better points-against record, 698-748.

In Thursday’s (July 24) semi-finals, Toronto got a 28 point effort from Tramar Sutherland. Combined with 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal, he was named Player of the game.

Both sides started off slow in the contest as they looked to find their stride. Each team played outstanding defence as neither side would give any ground. With three minutes left to play, 3D and Elite were tied at 47 points before an onslaught of big time three-pointers and timely baskets supercharged the contest.

For the gritty Elite, Agada registered 23 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. Clarke recorded 16 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 4 steals and 1 block.Sean Nickel and Sutherland took their game to another level as they each knocked down huge baskets. Caleb Agada and Jordan Clarke did the same for Burlington. With Toronto up three-points with 0.7 seconds remaining, Burlington stole the ball and attempted a last second three-point shot that fell short.

Hamilton’s Finest and the Waterloo Warriors left it all on the line in their semi-final game. Hamilton’s Finest came into the match-up as the favourite being seeded No. 2 in the NBBL Playoffs. Waterloo was seeded No. 6.

The Finest asserted their will early and jumped to an early 20-4 lead. The Warriors could have simply rolled over, but they began to chip away at the deficit and were able to tie the game at 45 at halftime. Hamilton became complacent towards the end of the first half and enabled the Warriors to get back into the game.

Hamilton upped its defensive intensity in the second half, just as they had exhibited in the first half and stymied Waterloo. The Finest took back control of both the game and the lead, and carried that towards the victory.

Co-players of the game were Terance Licorish (12 points, 16 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists) and Tyrone Watson (17 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists and 1 block) of the Finest.

The championship game goes at 8 p.m. at Redeemer University College in Ancaster. END
