The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com today announced that it will have a team in Vancouver, BC starting with the 2014-15 season which begins in November. “This is long overdue,” stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO. “We have always considered Vancouver to be one of the best potential ABA cities since the Grizzlies left there several years ago. We have been waiting for just the right owner to help maximize the potential of this fabulous city – and in Dave Poon Tip, we have found just that person. We are genuinely excited to have Dave and the City of Vancouver as part of the ABA.”
The team will be owned by Victory Sports Camps, a not-for-profit organization based in Burnaby, BC. According to Mr. Poon Tip, “The team will give local college and university graduates an opportunity to compete at the next level on their path to pro basketball if that is their eventual goal. In speaking with Lawrie Johns, the Director of Basketball BC, he agreed that there has been a need for this stepping stone for local players for many years.”
The Balloholics are currently a youth-based program providing classes from grades 2-9 year round and is a member of Steve Nash Youth Basketball and the AAU (www.balloholic.com). Established in 2006 and starting with a dozen students, VSC has grown to over 400 registrations in the past few years.
“The Balloholics will be expanding and revamping our entire youth program this fall to support the operation of the senior ABA team (www.aba.balloholic.com ),” added Poon Tip. “We are looking forward to the challenge and have started our journey to the ABA.”
The Vancouver Balloholics will be part of the new ABA Canada West, a division that is managed by Sal Rashidian, owner of the Calgary Crush. The goal is to add several additional teams in Western Canada. For more information, email info@balloholic.com or visit www.aba.balloholic.com. Or www.abalive.com. END

Game Recaps Kitsap & Calgary (Nov 8 & 14)
Kitsap Game Recap http://aba.balloholic.com/2014/11/13/ba ... merton-wa/
Click link for Calgary Herald site: http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/Cru ... story.html
During their first two full seasons in the American Basketball Association, the Calgary Crush played games solely against teams from the U.S.
That all changed this season with the addition of the Vancouver Balloholics into the ABA’s Pacific Northwest Division.
“Like I tell all my friends, it’s nice to play Arizona and Seattle and the American teams, but when you get to play another Canadian team, it’s a whole different ball game now,” said third-year Crush guard Kelvin Dela Pena prior to Calgary’s season- and home-opener, a 110-101 win over the Balloholics on Friday at the SAIT gym. “You’re talking about pride in Canada. These guys are the second team to be in Canada. Hopefully we’ll get more teams out there.”
Crush coach Eddie Richardson III would also like to see even more Canadian entries into the ABA in upcoming seasons.
“We’re looking for Edmonton, Saskatchewan – hopefully some other surprises here coming in the future,” said Richardson, while noting that Balloholics owner Dave Poon Tip is well known around Calgary. “He used to coach here in Calgary and we all remember him. We want to make sure he knows what we’re doing out here.”
Richardson also commended Crush owner Sal Rashidian for his efforts to bring a competitive professional basketball team to Calgary.
“Sal, our owner has done a great, great job building the brand and showing the country what can be done,” he said. “I think people will want to buy in.”
The Crush will travel to Vancouver for a rematch against the Balloholics next Friday before continuing their road trip with games in Washington State against the Kitsap Admirals on Saturday and the Lakewood Panthers on Sunday.
Dela Pena is one of six players who are back for their third full season with the Crush. The others are forwards Joseph Atangana, Tyler Fiddler and Jermaine Campbell along with guards Keenan Milburn and John Riad.
“We’ve got a good mix of young guys and the good core veterans are back,” said Dela Pena, who was born in the Philippines, but moved to Calgary when he was 10.
He grew up with Campbell and the pair went on to play high school ball in Calgary for the Bishop McNally Timberwolves.
“We won a couple championships back then,” Dela Pena said. “Growing up me and Jermaine were Kobe and Shaq. He was more of a Shaq. I was more of just a basketball player.”
Richardson is happy to have a veteran like Dela Pena, who has previous professional playing experience in the Philippines, back with the Crush for a third season.
“He’s a team player,” Richardson said. “He kind of fills the holes in what we need and he’s always looking to help out the squad where he can.”
The Crush will play a 10-game season, which includes two home games against the Arizona Scorpions in early January before a pair of road games against the San Francisco Rumble, who will make a return trip to Calgary for two more games in February.
“The teams we’re playing are big,” Richardson said. “If we win those games we’ll be set up pretty well. This year we’re hoping that we can continue all the way on to the playoffs and to the finals.”
Richardson went on to explain that the ABA ranks teams throughout and at the end of their season depending on the quality of opponents they face.
“I explain to people that it’s like NCAA football,” he said. “Depending on your strength of schedule will determine if you make the playoffs. The harder teams you play, the better opportunities you have to get farther.” END

Balloholics @HeadBalloholic (Jan 20) Balloholics came up short on the weekend 113-106 vs @LKWDPANTHERS . Balloholics lead most of the game until foul trouble caught up with them.
Click link for BallOHolic site: http://aba.balloholic.com/2014/11/28/de ... n-rampage/
Jan 30 the Lakewood Panthers come to visit at Langley Events Centre 8pm. The Balloholics would like to offer any player from U16 down who’s ever been in our program and still has a piece of their gear with the Balloholic logo free entry to the game.
Doesn’t matter if you’ve outgrown it we’d love to see you again. So dig into that closet and head out to see an exciting ABA game with its special rules for high scoring games and that red white and blue ball. Maybe you’ll run into some old classmates.

The Kitsap Admirals come calling to BCIT this Sat Feb 21 7pm in another rematch the Balloholics are looking forward to. Kitsap came back in the final minute in the first meeting to win at the buzzer down in Washington. The Balloholics are a totally different team today.
So much has changed since we started last summer in the ABA, we’ve grown and learned so much as a program.
Another new player has found his way to the Senior Balloholics. Osman Olol 6’9″ from Ottawa ON played at Coppin St and just returned from playing in Egypt. Osman makes the Balloholics even bigger upfront and looks to have a good fundamental base in his first practice.
Come out and show your support as this is the final home game of the season and yes we’re already planning on next years team, schedule and youth program changes. Look for players involved in our programs in spring and summer until they go back to work next fall in the ABA. END

END
