Sitting Courtside: The Misconception Of Playing Overseas
ESPN http://espn.go.com/olympics/basketball/ ... rn-ukraine
Click link for full article: http://sittingcourtside.wordpress.com/2 ... -overseas/
1. You are countless miles away from everyone you love.
Professional athletes overseas are away from family, friends, and everything they love for 8-9 months out of the year. Although technology has made communication a lot easier and simpler, Skype and FaceTime sometimes are not enough. When you are having down days, there is no one here who you can run to, lean on, cry on, or get a hug from. The most your loves can do is give you encouraging words over a video chat. You truly miss your family and your friends! Being overseas you learn how to be alone, but sometimes it gets real lonely.
2. You are surrounded by non-English Speakers.
The language barrier overseas is a big deal. If you do not know the language of the country you are in, life can get really hard and frustrating. Imagine not being able to communicate with your boss and co-workers, but expected to perform your job at the highest level. It is a daily challenge and struggle. Life gets difficult when your coach cannot communicate with you his expectations; he gets frustrated, and in return, you get frustrated.
Also, language barriers add onto the loneliness factor. By not being able to communicate with your teammates (the people you are around 100% of the time when you are not home), you feel isolated and alone. You are often left by yourself, at a table full of people. You just pray that wherever you are has wi-fi so you can communicate with someone via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Imessage, or WhatsApp.
3. You are putting in hard work everyday.
A lot of people forget that playing a sport involves practice. I do not just show up on game day and perform for two hours, once a week. I have to be in a gym six days a week putting in hours. Sometimes we even have practice twice a day. My body is stressed and pushed to limits everyday. Yes I am keeping in shape, but it is still exhausting. Just like any other job, some days I want to go home and just lie down.
4. Sick Days? Whats That?
Unless you are in a hospital, you will be at work. There are no sick days here. Period.
5. Time-off is not guaranteed.
A lot of people think that being overseas, I have so much free time to travel the world. Let me tell you, it is the complete opposite. Time off is never consistent and not promised. Days off depend on your performance. A lot of the time I do not find out if I have a day off until after the end result of a game. Depending on our performance, sometimes we will get one day off, sometimes we will get two. However, whatever the time off may be, it is never enough time or notice to book a trip half way across Europe. Besides, most of the time you want to spend your days off recuperating and preparing for the next week. Do you travel around America every off day you get? END
