For someone who started playing competitive basketball at the age of 17, Dranadia Roc has had a marvelous career with the round ball.

And, at the age of 30, it may not be over.

Roc is the same person who was an All-Canadian at Vanier College in Montreal and attended Florida State University on a hoops scholarship.

Then, on to the University of Windsor where she completed her formal education, chosen an All-Canadian, was all-team leading scorer and on the Lancers squad that won the first of a series of OUA titles. Toss in a year of playing with the pros in Iceland.

And there's more, as in two seasons in the George Brown Women’s Basketball League – which has many talented players, on eight teams, play once a month on weekends. The league is not restricted to former George Brown players.

Roc is hoping things work out so she can participate, yet again, in the George Brown league, which starts Saturday, October 25 at the St. James Campus. Each participating team pays a combined $1,450 entry fee with proceeds going to help the George Brown Huskies women’s varsity team.

Working part time with the Toronto Raptors Basketball Development program, Roc is also a few courses away from her dream job – a police officer. She's also hoping to catch on with Toronto Police Services.
But the passion for basketball lives on.

“The George Brown league is fantastic,” said Roc, who has played in a Toronto Men’s league. “It allows us, with jobs and careers, to still find some time – and weekends are great – to play, have some fun and meet friends from years past,” said Roc, who was also on Canada’s Senior National team in 2004.

“For me, it’s hard to let go – the game never goes away,” said Roc. “I know others, from university days, and we still play like it’s a National playoff and bragging rights.”

Veteran George Brown coach Sharon Butler, who launched the event seven years ago, said it’s more than a recreational league.

“We have some amazing athletes from past years in this high calibre league,” said Butler. “It’s not only a place for women to play, but also a great learning experience for George Brown players to see some very talented players, mix and mingle and benefit.”

The George Brown Women’s Basketball League runs this year Oct. 25-26, November 15-16 and in 2015 on January 9-10, February 21-22, March 14-15 with playoffs on April 18-19. For more information, e-mail butlerballer@rogers.com or call 416-505-0535 - DG END

Stephanie Brembridge and Shannon Matheson are hoping their career schedules will allow them to once again return to the basketball court at George Brown College.

Basketball stars in their post-secondary days, and now both focused on careers, get-together time would be nice – along with many more talented female players – when the annual George Brown Basketball Women’s League starts another season in October.

Brembridge suited up for the Huskies for two seasons starting in 1998, was a team scoring champ averaging 19.4 points a game, an All-Canadian and a league all-star in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.

Matheson came to George Brown for the Sport and Event Marketing Program after graduating in Business-Marketing from St. Francis Xavier University in Halifax. Matheson played in 2009, was team MVP, an OCAA all-star and George Brown’s Female Athlete of the Year.

Now, Brembridge is working in childhood education with the Peel District School Board and Matheson, who lives in Halifax, is employed in sport marketing with SDI Management and organizing Professional Golf Association events.

Brembridge, now 34 years of age, and Matheson, who is 28, also haven’t forgotten the days in the George Brown Women’s League, started by Huskies head coach Sharon Butler.

It’s a competitive league that allows former U.S. and Canadian College and University players, along with those who have competed for Canada’s National team or in various pro leagues, an opportunity to keep playing.

Starting in October, eight teams play a series of games on a weekend in each month (for six consecutive months) ending with a championship on April 18-19, 2015 at the St. James Campus gym. The weekend games are what make the league attractive to players, with committed careers, who can still meet up for some fun and old time memories.

“I haven’t played in awhile, must have been some alumni games, and I’m really thinking of coming back for this Women’s League,” said Brembridge. “Meeting up with old friends and the feeling of being back at College. I’m trying to find time to make it happen.”

For Matheson, now working in Eastern Canada, the memories of playing at George Brown and the Women’s League are times she’ll cherish.

“You kept in shape, it was always fun and the quality of play was great meeting up with former Varsity athletes from Canada and the United States,” said Matheson. “It was nice to get out and live the dream.”

Women’s League games are set for October 25-26, November 15-16 of 2014 as well as January 9-10, February 21-22 and March 14-15, 2015. For information, contact butlerballer@rogers.com or call 416-505-0535 to register. - DG END

Alisa Wulff and Nicole Brugger have several things in common.

Both are fire fighters.

The two also know what to do with a basketball.

Superb role models for young women, Wulff and Brugger hope things will work in their favor so a return to the hardwood is possible for the George Brown Women’s Basketball League.

The annual event, which raises funds for the Huskies women’s varsity team, starts a new season of once-a-month weekend games on October 25-26.

Event organizer Sharon Butler, also the head coach of the George Brown Varsity squad, is hoping eight teams register for the league, which also has games set for November 15-16 of this year. In 2015, teams will play January 9-10, February 21-22, and March 14-15 with the playoffs on April 18-19.

All games are held in the Alex Barbier gym at the St. James Campus on King Street East in Toronto.

Just in case Wulff and Brugger are not names that catch your attention, here's a bit more about them. Wulff is a former member of Canada’s Junior National basketball squad and Brugger, an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association All-star while playing at George Brown, have done well with the round ball.

Despite fulltime jobs, the George Brown league allows them - and others - an opportunity to continue playing a sport that has meant so much - as well as re-acquaint with friends from College and University days.

“I’m a big fan of the (George Brown) Women’s League,” said Wulff, who is now fighting fires and saving lives as a member of the Pickering Fire Department. “Once a month works well for me, the league has a high calibre of players and it’s nice to see so many of them.”

Wulff, a shooting guard, was an Academic All-American while at Michigan State University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. After getting her Bachelors Degree in Kinesiology, Wulff also earned a Masters Degree in Sport Management at the University of Windsor and played on a team that finished fourth at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport playoffs.

Brugger was in the Food and Beverage Management Program at George Brown from 2003-2006. She later changed career paths and joined the Markham Fire Department. A point guard, and one of the Huskies top scorers in the 2002-2003 season, Brugger also thinks the George Brown Women’s League is a bonus for former players.

“Whether it is playing basketball or just the social aspect, this is a wonderful opportunity for women to continue with the game,” she said. “It’s also nice to be able to offer some advice to those on the (George Brown) Varsity team.” END
