Professional basketball is coming to Waterloo Region this winter.

The National Basketball League of Canada, headed by commissioner David Magley, announced a team has been approved for Waterloo Region. That team will start play in the league this winter.

The long-rumoured move was made official on Tuesday afternoon at a press conference at The Aud.

The majority owner of the team is local company Ball Construction, headed by Cameron and Jason Ball.

Secondary ownership belongs to software company InnoSoft Canada via CEO Brian Foster and chief tech officer Jeff Berg. The third part of the ownership group, and the only individual in the deal is business owner Leon Martin from Elmira. The approximate cost for team start-up is $300,000.

The team, which will be named as part of a contest in about a month’s time, is expected to play at The Aud, but the City of Kitchener and the NBL have yet to undertake negotiations for the space.

Magley said the NBL has been looking at the Waterloo Region essentially since the league started six years ago, but nothing has been solidified until now.

And now that they’re in, he expects the franchise to thrive.

The ownership group represents a broad and diverse cross-section of the community, which Magley believes will help ticket sales and sponsorship. With Ball Construction, a large workforce is reached, along with the construction industry. With InnoSoft, Kitchener’s tech industry is reached; and with Martin, the word can get out to the townships in Waterloo Region.

Before meeting over the last few weeks, the three groups had never met.

“Someone above must have really had good fortune on us. They’re all great guys and they all were on the same page the second they got on board,” said Magley.

“It’s not like the commissioner is a great peddler and I talked them into doing something they didn’t want to do. They were excited as soon as they had the opportunity and they want to move very, very quickly.”

Some basketball fans in Waterloo could take this announcement with a grain of salt, however. This isn’t the first time a professional basketball team has been promised.

In September 2015, former Toronto Raptors coach Butch Carter announced a Waterloo team would be the cornerstone franchise for his upstart Canadian Basketball League, which was set to rival the previously-established NBL.

Just months later, in November, Carter announced the Waterloo team would be delayed a year.

In a way, Carter cleared a lot of the way for the NBL to come in to the region.

“We have this community that I know will support a team, plus you have a volunteer base of 30-plus people that Butch Carter touched base with earlier,” said Magley. “We have a group of people who were ready to go about a year ago that are really excited to get things going.”

With the Waterloo Region team, a total of 10 teams are now in the league.

Franchises are required to have at least four Canadian players, but there is no requirement to sign locals. The average salary is only $150,000, while team operating budgets range from $500,000 to $750,000.

Magley said the NBL wants the team to be a Waterloo Region or Tri-Cities team, rather than just belonging to one city.

“We want to make sure we don’t leave anyone out,” said Magley.

In terms of timelines, where is a lot of work to be done before first tip-off in the fall.

In mid-July, the team will be named using the results from fan suggestions at www.kwnbl.com.

In August, the team name, head coach and first signing will be announced.

At the end of August or beginning of September, the league will host its first-ever all-Canadian draft, in which the Waterloo Region team has the first pick.

In September, player signings will roll in, and the season will start in December.

“It has been a pretty decent kept secret and the people involved in the ownership group are already hearing from a lot of people who want to be a part of it,” said Magley, adding that Ball Construction was impressed with the talent that was willing to volunteer for the team.

One of those volunteers is John Thompson, who was named CEO of the Waterloo CBL franchise before it folded. Thompson was involved in hosting the Memorial Cup in Kitchener in 2008. Another is John Haddock, former CEO of the YMCA.

“Both cities’ mayors and rec departments are also there asking ‘how can we help?’” said Magley.

According to Magley, community is what local sports teams are all about.

“Because we’re a winter sport, we’re really involved with the schools because we get to be there during the school season,” said Magley, adding that the NBL players will stand out a bit, even in high schools. “It’s an automatic attention-getter.”

The league hopes they can use that attention-getting size to do what they can to curb issues such as bullying and drug abuse.

“We’ll deliver whatever message is needed in this area,” said Magley.

Ticket prices have yet to be determined, but they will go on sale shortly with season tickets available. Magley believes that with how connected the ownership group is, the courtside seats will go very quickly.

“This is a market people have looked for and lusted for for a long time. I’m very excited for this opportunity for our league.”
