Tyrell Peter Dechamp remains in the Ontario corrections system awaiting his fate after his capture on a Canadawide warrant in April.
Dechamp, 26, was sought by Halifax police after he skipped curfew at a halfway house he was residing in on Gottingen Street on April 19.
He was found and apprehended April 28 in Ottawa, three days after the warrant was issued.
Dechamp was arrested without incident for being unlawfully at large. No weapons or drugs were found at the scene.
At the time, police said he was going to be returned to Halifax.
Detective Constable Steve Sermet, who was a part of the arrest, previously told the Chronicle Herald the process Dechamp might go through.
“There’ll probably be a parole officer speaking with him and at that point after the interview, he’ll probably be taken back to Halifax,” said Sermet. He said the interview would be conducted within five business days.
He’s been in the custody of Canada’s Correctional Services for two weeks, and the transfer has yet to take place.
Though privacy law kept Correctional Service Canada from discussing specifics, they did say Dechamp was under their jurisdiction.
“He is being supervised by us,” said Kyle Lawlor, spokesman for Ontario.
“When conditions are breached, the parole board often assesses things and can revoke parole. Even if he was out in the world, he may still be under our jurisdiction. Things may have to be reassessed now.”
He referred questions about the specifics of Dechamp’s case to the Parole Board of Canada. The board didn’t comment before publication.
Dechamp previously served time for murder, assault and other crimes.
He missed his curfew at the Gottingen halfway house the same night Naricho Clayton and Ricardo Whynder were shot in an SUV on the street.
Clayton would die from his injuries and Whynder was admitted to hospital with serious injuries. His condition has improved.
Despite the timing, Const. Dianne Woodworth with the Halifax Regional Police cannot say for sure if Dechamp is connected to the recent murders in Halifax, including that of Naricho Clayton.
“We don’t disclose the names of suspects. We still do have a suspect, and our investigation is ongoing,” said Woodworth.
The HRP has previously stated their belief that the murder of former Halifax Rainmen player Tyler Richards, 29, and the death of Clayton are related.
It has been previously reported Clayton and Richards were known to one another, and that Whynder, the passenger present in the Gottingen murder, is Richards’ cousin.
Police also asked the public Wednesday to provide any information about a car that may be connected to the Richards murder.
He was the victim of a shooting on Cook Avenue on April 17. Richards, Daverico Downey, Naricho Clayton and Joseph Cameron have all been shot and killed in recent weeks.
Investigators asked anyone who has information about an “older model black Honda car in the area of Cook and Romans avenues between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m.” on the day of Richards’ murder to come forward.
“We’ve gathered information and feel this car and possibly the occupants are of interest in this case,” said Woodworth.
All four cases are now a part of the provincial Major Unsolved Crimes Program, and people could receive a $150,000 reward for information that leads to the arrests or convictions of the person or people responsible for the crimes.
“Adding four homicides to the rewards program at once and within weeks of the homicides occurring is a highly unusual step for investigators, but it’s also a highly unusual time for our community,” said Halifax Regional Police Supt. Jim Perrin during a May 2 press conference.
On Wednesday, Tyler Richards’ father and brother both appeared in court on a number of gun-related matters they were charged with four days after the 29-year-old’s murder.
Leonard Thomas Evans, 38, and Leonard Fraser, 62, were arrested in North Preston and charged with a number of firearm violations.
Evans also faces an additional charge of possession of a firearm contrary to order. Officers seized three long guns from the home, including one restricted weapon.
They both appeared for election and will be back June 15.
Police ask anyone with information about the cases at all to call police at 902-490-5020, or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Rapper and former basketball star Christian “T-Bear” Upshaw was in Halifax on Friday shooting a special music video in honour of Tyler Richards.
Upshaw, who grew up with Richards in the Mulgrave Park neighbourhood, recently moved to Calgary to focus on his music career after stepping away from pro basketball.
Richards was murdered earlier this year, and the case remains unsolved.
“This is all about Tyler,” said Upshaw, 29.
“He was my best friend, and we were as close as it gets. Of course, the loss was devastating, but now we’re just trying to celebrate his life and show people how much he meant to this community.”
Upshaw and his entourage were at the community basketball courts in Mulgrave Park shooting the music video for a song called For Twitch, which was Richards’ nickname.
They also shot some footage in front of the new community mural honouring Richards.
A group of children played basketball on the court while Upshaw rapped over the lyrics in front of them for the camera.
A lot of the kids were wearing special t-shirts in Richards’ memory, but Upshaw opted for a simple black shirt and shorts.
“I didn’t just lose a best friend,” he said.
“This whole community lost a best friend, and we’re like a close-knit family over here. But I’m just trying to be as positive as possible, and show these kids that they can do anything. Just look at what Tyler was able to accomplish. He was an inspiration to us all.”
Upshaw wrote For Twitch just after Richards’ passing in April.
It wasn’t easy, he said, but it’s all from the heart.
“I wrote the song pretty much right after it happened,” he said. “I just sat down and wrote it. It’s my dedication to Tyler, and my way to express how much he meant to me. I feel like I got my message across, because people in the community seem to be receiving the song really well. This song means a lot to us.”
He also said he’s feeling a lot more fulfilled since he hung up his jersey and decided to focus on music. His latest mixtape, Flow State, is set for release in a couple of weeks.
“It’s all been going really well,” said Upshaw. “I was just in Houston doing a few shows down there, and I also went to South by Southwest. I didn’t get to perform, but it was still a great experience. Right now I’m working with a couple different producers and my creative team, just trying to figure out the next move.”
No matter where Upshaw’s music career takes him, Mulgrave Park will always be close to his heart.
Even all the way from Calgary, staying connected and giving back to his community will always be his number one priority.
“This is the community that made me,” he said.
“So at the end of the day, I have to give it everything I’ve got and make this community proud. If people need me to do anything to help this community, I’ll do it, no questions asked. I really love it here, and if the economy on the East Coast wasn’t the way it is, I would still be here.”
